World’s New Island to Offer Clues for Finding Life on Mars

Introduction

The world’s newest island, off the coast of Tongan capital Nuku’alofa, in the remote Pacific Ocean is creating interest in the scientific fraternity. This is due to the way it was created about three years ago.

According to the Scientists, this new volcanic island could offer clues to how life originated on the red planet Mars. This island was formed due to the underwater volcanic explosion. According to the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) Scientists, many such volcanic islands existed in the earlier phase of Martian evolution when there was enough water filling the ditches on the planet surfaces. In this blog post, we will see why the Science Community generated interest in this remote island that was recently formed.

New Island

World’s Newest Island

This volcanic island was formed during a volcanic eruption in the remote Pacific Ocean about three years ago. As a result of the volcanic activity, the island of Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai rose from the seabed about 65 kilometers northwest of the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa in late 2014 or early 2015. The island initially measured a width of 1 kilometer, length of 2 kilometers and a height of 100 meters. Now, its size is reduced due to significant sea erosion. However, this landmass is expected to last anywhere between six and 30 years, offering plenty of time for the scientific communities to ponder over its chemical and physical compositions. This would enable them to get some clues about the origin of life.

Dynamics of Island Formation

Normally, such masses thrown to the surface during underwater volcanic eruptions are eroded by the seawater acting on the molten magma. These physical and chemical activities would soften the mass, leading to its early disposal by the seawater. Instead of the spontaneous disintegration, the landmass got solidified into a compact concrete-like mass called “tuff” due to the action of seawater on rock and dense volcanic ash that came out from the seabed.

Reason for Interest by Scientific Community

The Scientific Community is expected to study this new cycle of island formation to look for the prime spots where the life could have gained the foothold. According to the Chief Scientist of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, many such spots could even be spotted on the Martian surface in its earlier part of evolution when there was sufficient water on its surface. Thus, examining the hot spots could enable the Scientists world over to search for life on the Martian surface. They are of the view that such island systems worked on Mars two or three billion years ago.
